This project involved using After Effects to create a charity video, for the charity of my choice. After some research I chose to contact a small local charity “Friends of the Dogs” in association with Cardiff Dogs Home. They’re a charity based in Cardiff that helps Cardiff Dogs Home to promote and fundraise for the rehoming of dogs.

The brief requested that the video was to be created using only After Effects. Having never used this programme, I created a large number of tests to experiment with the functions and uses; a good number of them were broken and faulty, which is how I learnt what was wrong and how to fix the problems. The biggest problems tended to be related to the size of the video, compression, the sound and so on.

Once I figured out how to fix these issues, I began creating tests in relation to the final video, including an animatic. Including a number of broken tests, I managed to created 63 tests.

As I do not consider myself a strong animator, I decided from the start that the animation would be stylistically basic.

I drew dogs, full bodied and with legs detached, ready to be animated. I used After Effects to animate the dogs moving and then went on to green screen the animation to put into the final video.

I’m pleased with the overall outcome of the video, and even more pleased by the response I received from the charity; they subsequently uploaded it to their YouTube channel. I enjoyed the challenges that the project gave me, especially the satisfaction from the client’s approval of my work.

This was a three week project that, had I had more time and resources (solely in terms of sound) , could have been improved in areas. However, I remain proud of my work, created by software I hadn’t used prior to this.

I received a 2:2 for this project.
